In recent years, China’s steel exports have gradually moved away from the volume-driven model relying on ordinary long products and low-end plates. The share of high-value-added steel products has risen steadily. Steel pipes, special stainless steel, alloy steel plates, offshore engineering steel and pressure vessel plates have become major growth drivers for exports. Export markets keep diversifying, with orders from ASEAN, the Middle East, Latin America and other Belt and Road markets accounting for an increasing proportion, instead of relying merely on a small number of traditional markets.
Global demand for special steel stays buoyant, backed by shipbuilding, new energy, infrastructure and oil & gas equipment sectors. ASEAN has seen expanding photovoltaic, factory and water conservancy infrastructure projects. Engineering buyers in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and other countries show steady rising demand for high-quality pipes, structural plates and stainless steel, creating stable export opportunities for China’s high-grade steel.
Low-carbon smelting, carbon capture and other green steel technologies are being rapidly deployed in China. Low-carbon steel products are gradually launched into the global market. As EU CBAM and green procurement policies are rolled out across multiple countries, high-value-added steel with low-carbon attributes will generate new premium and build differentiated advantages over conventional carbon steel.
China’s steel export has entered an era driven by quality. With standard compliance, customised production and stable supply capacity, high-value-added steel continues to expand its footprint in global engineering markets. For ASEAN markets, high-quality steel pipes, special plates and stainless steel will further unlock export potential and support Chinese steel foreign-trade enterprises in deepening overseas project bidding and long-term client partnerships.
